How to Care for Your Handcrafted Ring
Everything you need to know about caring for your recycled skateboard ring or wood-lined wedding band — from daily wear to long-term storage.
How to Care for Your Handcrafted Ring
Your ring is made from real wood — recycled skateboard maple or stabilized ancient wood like bog oak or koa. With basic care, it'll look great for years. Here's what you need to know.
The CA Glue Finish
Every Rebirth ring is sealed with a thin coat of CA glue (cyanoacrylate) on the interior. This is the same adhesive used in high-end wood turning — not polyurethane, not lacquer. It creates a glass-smooth, water-resistant barrier that protects the wood from the inside out.
This finish is durable, but it's not indestructible. Here's how to keep it in top shape.
Daily Wear Tips
Your ring is designed to be worn every day. A few simple habits will keep it looking fresh:
- Remove before washing dishes or showering. Brief hand washing is fine, but prolonged water exposure can soften the finish over time.
- Take it off for heavy manual work. Wood rings are surprisingly tough, but direct impact against hard surfaces can chip the edge.
- Avoid harsh chemicals. Household cleaners, chlorine, and solvents can damage the CA glue finish.
- Wipe down after wearing. A quick buff with a soft dry cloth removes oils and keeps the grain visible.
What About Water?
Quick splashes — washing your hands, getting caught in the rain — are totally fine. The CA finish handles that. What you want to avoid is soaking: swimming, hot tubs, long showers with the ring on.
If your ring does get submerged, dry it thoroughly and let it sit overnight before wearing again.
Caring for Wood-Lined Wedding Bands
Our premium wedding bands have a steel shell lined with stabilized wood. The stabilization process fills the wood fibers with resin, making them far more resistant to moisture and temperature changes.
Care tips specific to wedding bands:
- The steel shell is tough. It won't scratch or dent from normal wear.
- The wood liner is stabilized but still benefits from the same water precautions as skateboard rings.
- Gold plating on some bands will develop a natural patina over time. This is by design.
Storage
When you're not wearing your ring:
- Store in the pouch that ships with every order. This prevents scratches and limits moisture exposure.
- Keep away from direct sunlight for extended periods. UV can fade wood colors over time.
- Room temperature is ideal. Avoid extreme heat or cold.
Signs of Wear
Over time, you might notice:
- The finish dulling slightly — this is normal with daily wear. A light buff with a microfiber cloth brings it back.
- Minor surface scratches — wood is softer than metal. Small scratches add character, but deep ones should be addressed.
- Color deepening — the wood grain often becomes richer and more pronounced with age. This is a feature, not a flaw.
